While Slingshot is set against the backdrop of real historical events, such as the immigration waves of the 1920s and the Great Depression, the book is a work of fiction. Characters like Otto, Minna, and Daniel Dangerfield are products of the author’s imagination, though they reflect the struggles and realities of the era.
The saga currently consists of three planned titles. You should start with Book 1: Slingshot, followed by the sequel Book 2: Under the Veil. A third book, titled The Penance, is listed as “coming soon” to conclude the story.
The novel spans the Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression era. It begins with the Schmidt family’s arrival at Ellis Island in April 1922 and follows their lives in Manhattan through 1937, ending as they prepare to leave New York during the slow recovery from the Depression.
Yes. The end of Slingshot sets the stage for the sequel, Under the Veil. The second book will follow Otto, Minna, and Megan as they leave the dangers of Manhattan behind to reinvent themselves in the cattle ranching business in Kansas.
Broderick B. Williams has a diverse background of service. He is a military veteran who served in the Army and later as an aircraft loadmaster in the Air Force Reserves. His travels around the world and his experiences, including earning a private pilot’s license, have informed his disciplined approach to writing this historical saga.
Absolutely. Slingshot covers deep, discussable themes including the American immigrant experience, domestic trauma, betrayal, and the moral complexities of revenge. The dramatic twists and character dynamics offer plenty of material for group discussion.
